- Wash the screen itself. Fabric softener leaves an invisible film that restricts airflow. Scrub it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, then dry it completely.
- Open the back or bottom panel. Access varies by model. The goal is the blower housing and the area around the heating element.
- Vacuum the interior thoroughly. Remove the lint pads around the drum, blower and element. Take care around wiring and the moisture sensor bars.
- Wipe the moisture sensor. The two metal strips inside the drum get coated by softener residue, which makes an auto-dry cycle stop too early or run too long.
- Reassemble and run a short cycle. Check for unusual noise before returning it to normal use.
