How often should you clean your dryer vent / exhaust duct?
Clean dryer vent / exhaust duct once a year. The commonly recommended range is every 12 months. Lint-clogged vents are a leading cause of house fires. This is a safety-critical task, so do not let it slip.
Lint escapes the trap on every load and settles along the duct between the dryer and the outside wall. It is fine, dry and highly combustible, sitting in the one part of the house that is deliberately heated. This is a fire prevention job, not a performance one.

Clothes dryers cause thousands of house fires a year, and failure to clean them is the leading contributing factor. Well before that point, a restricted duct makes the dryer run far longer per load, wasting energy and shortening the life of the heating element.
How do you do it?
- Unplug the dryer, and shut off the gas if fitted. On a gas dryer, close the shutoff valve before moving anything.
- Pull the dryer out and disconnect the duct. Loosen the clamp at the back of the machine rather than pulling the hose free.
- Clear the duct with a rotary brush kit. Work from both ends where you can. A drill-driven brush on flexible rods will reach the full run.
- Clean the exterior vent hood. Check the flap opens and closes freely. Birds and lint both block it.
- Vacuum the cavity behind the drum. Lint collects around the heating element itself, not only in the duct.
- Reconnect and confirm airflow. Run the dryer for a minute and check outside that air is leaving the vent with force.

What do people get wrong?
- Cleaning the lint screen and assuming the duct is done: the screen catches only part of it
- Using flexible foil or vinyl duct, which traps lint in its ridges and is prohibited by code in many places. Rigid or semi-rigid metal is the correct material
- Crushing the duct against the wall when pushing the dryer back, which undoes the whole job
- Long runs with several elbows that were never within the manufacturer’s maximum length to begin with
What changes how often you need to do it?
- Large households running daily loads need it more often than twice a year
- A long or convoluted duct run traps far more lint than a short straight one
- Pet hair and heavy bedding loads accelerate buildup significantly
When should you stop and call someone?
If the duct runs through a wall cavity or ceiling, or more than about 10 feet with multiple bends, a professional with proper rotary equipment will actually clear it rather than push the blockage further along.

United States
The NFPA and the US Fire Administration both identify dryers as a significant residential fire cause, with failure to clean as the leading contributing factor. Most codes require rigid or semi-rigid metal duct and cap total developed length, commonly 35 feet less deductions for each elbow.
United Kingdom
Condenser and heat pump dryers are far more common than vented ones, and they need the condenser unit and its filters cleaned instead of a duct. Where a vented model is fitted the same fire risk applies, and it must not discharge into an enclosed space.
Australia
Vented dryers are widely used in laundries and garages, and many are wall-mounted. Make sure the discharge actually reaches outside rather than into a closed laundry, where the moisture drives mould. Heat pump dryers are increasingly common and need filter and condenser cleaning instead.
Canada
Cold weather adds a specific failure mode: moist exhaust condenses and freezes at the vent hood, blocking it completely. Check the exterior flap through winter and keep snow clear of it. Rigid metal duct is required by code.
