How often should you replace your wiper blades?
Replace wiper blades once a year. The commonly recommended range is every 6-12 months. Streaky, torn wipers kill visibility in rain and snow. It is seasonal work, best done in autumn / fall.
Wiper rubber is consumable. Ultraviolet light hardens it, heat and cold cycle it, and grit abrades the edge until the blade smears rather than clears. It is one of the cheapest safety items on a car and one of the most consistently neglected.

What happens if you skip replacing your wiper blades?
The failure shows up exactly when it matters: heavy rain at night, or the first frost of the season smeared across the glass while the low sun is directly ahead. Worn blades also let the metal frame contact the glass, which scratches the windscreen permanently.
How do you do it?
- Lift the arm away from the glass. Support it. If it snaps back against bare glass it can crack the windscreen.
- Note the fitting type. Hook, bayonet, pinch tab or push button. Getting this wrong is the main reason a replacement will not fit.
- Release the old blade and remove it. There is usually a tab or clip. It rarely needs force.
- Fit the new blade until it clicks. Tug it gently to confirm it is locked before lowering the arm.
- Do the rear wiper too. It is routinely forgotten and it is usually the worst of the set.
- Clean the glass properly and test. A new blade on a contaminated screen still smears. Clean the glass, top up the washer fluid, and test.

When should you stop and call someone?
If the wiper arm itself is loose, the spline is worn, or the motor is slow, that is a workshop job rather than a blade.

United States
Widely available in every parts store with in-store fitting usually free. Winter-specific blades with a rubber boot over the frame are worth it in northern states.
United Kingdom
Wiper condition is an MOT test item, and a blade that does not clear the screen effectively is a failure. Autumn is the natural replacement point, before the wet and dark months.
Australia
Ultraviolet exposure is the dominant wear factor rather than ice, and blades in cars parked outside in Queensland or the Northern Territory can perish within a year regardless of rainfall. Replace before the summer storm season in the north and before winter rain in the south.
Canada
Winter blades are close to essential: conventional blades clog with ice in the frame and lift off the glass. Change to winter blades in autumn, and never use the wipers to clear ice, which destroys the edge in one sweep.
