How often do you need to renew your MOT or vehicle registration?

Driving on an expired MOT/registration is illegal and uninsured.

Driving unregistered or without a valid test invalidates your insurance in most jurisdictions, which turns a minor collision into a personal financial catastrophe. Fines and vehicle impoundment are the lesser risk.

• Inspects brakes, steering, suspension and tyres for condition and effectiveness
• Checks lights, indicators, wipers, washers and horn
• Examines the structure and body for corrosion in prescribed areas
• Measures exhaust emissions against the standard for the vehicle’s age and fuel
• Checks seatbelts, mirrors, glazing and the registration plate
• Issues a certificate, or a refusal listing the defects by severity

Where testing is separate from repair, an independent test-only station has no incentive to find work. Where they are combined, get a second opinion on any expensive failure item before authorising the work.

• The renewal notice arriving, which is the practical reminder in most systems
• A warning light on the dashboard, which is an automatic failure in many test regimes
• Advisory items on the previous test, which are the things about to become failures
• Tyres near the legal limit or a windscreen chip in the swept area

• Fix advisories from last year before the retest rather than discovering they have become failures
• Book early: a failed test with an expired certificate leaves the car unusable
• Older vehicles may be exempt in some jurisdictions, historic vehicles particularly

The test itself must be done at an authorised station. What you can do beforehand is the pre-check: lights, wipers, washer fluid, tyres, number plate and warning lights, which between them account for a large share of avoidable failures.
