Seasonal
How often should you winterize your sprinkler system?
Sprinkler / irrigation winterization once a year. The commonly recommended range is annually (fall). Water left in irrigation lines freezes, cracks pipes and heads. It is seasonal work, best done in autumn / fall.
An irrigation system is a network of buried pipes, valves and sprinkler heads that cannot fully self-drain. Compressed air is used to force the remaining water out before it freezes, because water left in a manifold or a valve body will crack the housing.
Why does winterizing your sprinkler system matter?
Water left in irrigation lines freezes, cracks pipes and heads.
What happens if you skip winterizing your sprinkler system?
Cracked valve bodies, split poly pipe and shattered sprinkler heads, all buried and all discovered in spring when the system is turned on and water appears where it should not. Backflow preventers are particularly vulnerable and particularly expensive.
What does the professional actually do?
- Shuts off the irrigation supply and opens the drain valves
- Connects a compressor to the system at the blowout port, using volume rather than pressure
- Blows each zone in turn, starting with the furthest, until only mist rather than water emerges
- Keeps pressure within safe limits for the pipe material, typically well below 80 PSI
- Drains and protects the backflow preventer, which is the most freeze-vulnerable component
- Shuts down or reprograms the controller for the off season
How do you choose someone qualified?
The important detail is that blowouts need high air volume at low pressure, not high pressure. A small workshop compressor cannot supply the volume, and people compensate by raising pressure, which is exactly what damages the system.
What does it take?
How do you know winterizing your sprinkler system is overdue?
- The first frost date approaching, which is the only trigger that matters
- Heads that did not pop up properly during the season, which should be noted for spring repair
- Wet patches in the lawn indicating a leak to be fixed before shutdown
What changes how often you need to do it?
- Zone count drives cost and time
- Systems with a backflow preventer above ground need particular care
- Book early: irrigation contractors are heavily booked in the two weeks before first frost
When should you stop and call someone?
This is one of the few genuinely equipment-dependent jobs on the list. Attempting it with a small compressor either fails to clear the lines or, if you raise the pressure to compensate, damages heads and seals. The cost of a professional blowout is far less than one cracked manifold.

United States
Standard practice across the northern states and the mountain west. Backflow preventer testing is separately required annually by many water utilities, and that certification is often bundled with the seasonal service.
United Kingdom
Domestic irrigation systems are uncommon, since rainfall usually suffices and gardens are smaller. Where systems exist, the milder winter means draining down and insulating any above-ground components is generally sufficient rather than a full compressed air blowout. Outside taps and any above-ground pipework are the real freeze risk.
Australia
Freeze protection is irrelevant across almost all of Australia, so the blowout as such does not apply. The Australian seasonal irrigation task is the opposite one: checking and tuning the system before summer, replacing broken heads, adjusting run times to comply with local water restrictions, and confirming the controller matches the permitted watering days and hours in your state. Sprinkler bans and rostered watering days are enforced in Perth, Adelaide and many regional areas.
Canada
Essential everywhere with an in-ground system. The window between the end of the growing season and the first hard freeze is short, particularly in the Prairies, so booking in early September is sensible. Municipal backflow prevention requirements apply in many cities and involve annual testing by a certified tester.
Common questions
Why does winterizing your sprinkler system matter?
Water left in irrigation lines freezes, cracks pipes and heads.
What happens if you skip winterizing your sprinkler system?
Water left in irrigation lines freezes, cracks pipes and heads. Skipping it does not usually fail immediately, which is exactly why it gets forgotten: the consequence arrives months later as a repair bill rather than as an obvious fault.
Does winterizing your sprinkler system differ by country?
Common US/CA. Less common UK. Blow out lines before freeze. AU: freezing is rarely the issue, so the seasonal job is checking the system before summer and matching your state's watering restrictions.
When in the year is winterizing your sprinkler system best done?
This is seasonal work. Plan it for autumn / fall, before the weather it protects against arrives.
