Short answer

Open and balance the pool once a year. The commonly recommended range is yearly, when daytime temperatures stay above about 20°C (70°F). Starting the pump on unbalanced water or a damaged seal leads to algae, etched surfaces and costly pump repairs. It is seasonal work, best done in spring.

Opening the pool is a sequence: cover off without dumping debris into the water, equipment reconnected and checked, then the water balanced before anyone swims. Doing it in the right order saves days of green water.

Why does opening your pool matter?

Starting the pump on unbalanced water or a damaged seal leads to algae, etched surfaces and costly pump repairs.

What happens if you skip opening your pool?

Starting a pump dry or with a cracked housing damages it, and unbalanced water etches plaster, corrodes metal and grows algae within days.

How do you do it?

  1. Clear and remove the cover. Pump or sweep standing water and leaves off the cover first so they do not end up in the pool. Clean and dry the cover before storing it.
  2. Reconnect the equipment. Refit plugs, return fittings, the pump and filter, and check O-rings and seals for cracks.
  3. Top up the water. Bring the level to the middle of the skimmer opening.
  4. Prime and start the pump. Fill the pump basket with water, start it, and check for leaks and a steady pressure reading.
  5. Test and balance the water. Adjust alkalinity first, then pH, then sanitiser, following the product instructions. Run the filter continuously for the first days.

What does it take?

Time
Half a day, plus a few days of filtering
You need
Test kit or strips, Pool chemicals for your system, Cover pump or brush, Spare O-rings

How do you know opening your pool is overdue?

  • Daytime temperatures staying warm
  • Algae forming under the cover

What do people get wrong?

  • Pulling the cover off full of leaves
  • Adding all the chemicals at once instead of balancing in order
  • Running the pump before priming it

When should you stop and call someone?

For a pump that will not prime, a leak you cannot find, or a heater that shows a fault.

Does this differ in the US, UK, Australia or Canada?

United States

Most northern pools open around Memorial Day. Check local rules on pool barriers and gates.

United Kingdom

Outdoor pools are usually opened in May. Heat pumps make a big difference to the swimming season.

Australia

Open in September to October. Many states require compliant pool fencing and some require registration and inspection certificates.

Canada

Open once overnight temperatures stay above freezing, usually late May.

Common questions

Why does opening your pool matter?

Starting the pump on unbalanced water or a damaged seal leads to algae, etched surfaces and costly pump repairs.

What happens if you skip opening your pool?

Starting the pump on unbalanced water or a damaged seal leads to algae, etched surfaces and costly pump repairs. Skipping it does not usually fail immediately, which is exactly why it gets forgotten: the consequence arrives months later as a repair bill rather than as an obvious fault.

Does opening your pool differ by country?

Universal. Southern hemisphere: September to October. Warm climates that keep the pool open all year can use this as the yearly deep check instead.

When in the year is opening your pool best done?

This is seasonal work. Plan it for spring, before the weather it protects against arrives.
