How often should you replace your AC air filter?

The filter sits in the return duct or the air handler and catches dust before it reaches the blower and the evaporator coil. It is the cheapest part of the system and the one that protects everything downstream, which is why it has the shortest interval of any HVAC job.

What happens if you skip replacing your AC air filter?
A clogged filter starves the blower of air. The evaporator coil then runs colder than designed and can freeze into a block of ice, which stops cooling entirely and can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor. Replacing a compressor costs more than a decade of filters.
How do you do it?
- Turn the system off. Switch the thermostat to Off so the blower cannot pull loose debris into the ducts while the slot is open.
- Find the filter slot. Either behind a return air grille on a wall or ceiling, or in a slot on the air handler where the return duct meets it.
- Note the size and the airflow arrow. The size is printed on the cardboard edge, for example 16x25x1. The arrow must point the way air travels, which is toward the blower.
- Slide the old one out flat. Keep it horizontal so trapped dust does not tip back into the duct.
- Fit the new filter and date it. Match the size exactly, point the arrow the same way the old one pointed, and write the date on the cardboard edge in marker.

What do people get wrong?
- Fitting it backwards, which collapses the media against the frame
- Buying the highest MERV number on the shelf: an over-restrictive filter can cut airflow enough to hurt the system, so use what the manufacturer specifies
- Forcing in a filter that is slightly oversized, which bows it and lets air bypass the edges
What changes how often you need to do it?

- Wildfire smoke season shortens it sharply
- A home left empty with the system off ages by date, not by use
When should you stop and call someone?
If the coil has already frozen, or the system short-cycles with a fresh filter fitted, book a technician. Both point to a refrigerant or airflow fault a filter will not fix.

United States
Sizes are nominal inches and MERV is the rating scale. One-inch filters are the common case and need the shortest interval, while four and five-inch media cabinets genuinely last 6 to 12 months. Central air is near universal across the South and Southwest, so this is a year-round job there rather than a summer one.
United Kingdom
Most UK homes have no ducted air conditioning at all, so this usually applies to a split system serving one or two rooms. Those use washable mesh filters behind the indoor unit cover rather than disposable panels: rinse under a tap, dry fully, refit. Filter ratings follow ISO 16890 rather than MERV.
Australia
Ducted refrigerated air conditioning is common in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, and split systems dominate elsewhere. Both want attention before the cooling season starts in November, not after it. Evaporative coolers, widespread across dry inland areas, use pads rather than filters and need a different seasonal service. Ratings follow ISO 16890.
Canada
The filter serves the furnace in winter as well as the air conditioner in summer, so it matters twelve months a year rather than seasonally. Homes with an HRV have a second set of filters on the ventilator that people routinely forget. Sizes are nominal inches and MERV, as in the US.
